The home study process usually includes at least four interviews by a social worker on separate days. At least one visit/interview will be in the adoptive family’s home. These interviews will help our social worker to evaluate your adoption motivation, family backgrounds, marriage stability, financial ability, physical condition, understanding of parenthood, home and community environment, support system, and other relevant issues to determine your readiness for adoption.
It usually takes six to eight weeks for a social worker to complete your home study and write a home study report based on federal, state, and Chinese government requirements. A Child Placement Supervisor will approve the report before it goes to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Your home study will also be a part of your dossier that will go to the in China.
social workers are experienced and dedicated professionals. As your home study providers, they will help support and prepare you during the most exciting journey of your life.
How to Choose a Home Study Agency in Your State
As adoptive applicants, you need to choose a licensed, non-profit agency in your area to do your home study. Your home study cannot be performed by an independent social worker. An approved home study report by the agency of your choice will enable us to work with the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) to match you with a child.
Considerations When Choosing a Home Study Agency:
- A licensed, non-profit home study/adoption agency is required.
- Call your State’s Department of Human Services, or other social service agency, and request a list of those non-profit agencies that are licensed to do home studies in your state.
- Do some comparative “shopping.” Fees and services for home studies vary widely from agency to agency. Find out what specific services their fees will cover (i.e., visits, number of visits, post adoption, mileage, etc.) and the length of time it will take to complete the home study.
- An agency with international adoption experience is recommended. Keep in mind that your home study agency will need to help you with USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) paperwork in your state.
- When you have chosen a home study agency, will need a copy of their agency license. will request this from your home study agency after your application has been approved.
Please feel free to contact the families on the reference form to ask them about their Home Study experience and who they chose to use for their Home Study and Post Adoption services.
